enjoying this unique combination. Salzburg is surrounded by several lakes
and a marvellous, still intact nature - and all this at a stone's throw!
This natural landscape offers a surprising alternative to city-life.
All the lakes can be easily reached by local transportation.

| Lake Wallersee: distance: about 10 minutes |

Lake Wallersee, with its surface of 6,4 km2 and maximum depth
of 23
m, is situated at 505 m above sea level in the middle of the prealpine hilly
region of Salzburg. Many small villages such as Neumarkt, Henndorf and
Seekirchen are located on its banks. Lake Wallersee also offers many
different restaurants specialized in traditional-style dishes in
Salzburg cuisine style, and also a variety of leisure activities, such as
sailing
and surfing. This lake is a small paradise for all fans of these sports
thanks to its constant west and east winds. The pleasant temperature of
its
water (on average 25°C) make the lake an ideal holiday-destination for
the whole family.

Lake Mattsee: distance: about half an hour

Lake Mattsee is situated on 503 m above sea level and has
a surface of
3,6 km2. The deepest point measures 40m. The Mattsee, together with the
Grabensee aund Obertrumersee, are part of the group of lakes called
Obertrumerseen. This lake too, thanks to its east winds, is a favourite
destination of surf and sailing fans. In August the temperature of the water
is about 24°C. Numerous sailing societies and surf-schools are located
around this it. Far away from mass-tourism, the area around the
Obertrumerseen lakes offers relaxation and a wide variety of sports,
culture and fun.

Lake Wolfgangsee: distance: about 45 minutes

St.Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee is well-known over the borders
of Austria. This
beautiful Mozart-village is situated on the west side of the lake at 538
m
above sea level. The Wolfgangsee covers a surface of 12,9 km2 and measures,
at its deepest point, 114 m. The temperature of the water reaches 22°C
in
August and makes it ideal for swimming and worth a visit. The Mozart
family had fallen in love with this small village in their time. St.Gilgen
offers, apart
from swimming, sailing and surfing many culinary delights and a lot of other
attractions. The Wolfgangsee is famous for its wind called "Brunnwind",
a
thermal wind promising nice weather.

Lake Mondsee (on the border of the Salzburger Land)

Lake Mondsee is situated on the border of the Salzburger Land
and is
located, from a geographic point of view, already in the region of
Oberoesterreich at 481 m above sea level. This lake with a surface of 14,2
square km takes its name from its particular crescent shape. The
Mondsee is surrounded by the Drachenwand (wall of the dragon), rich in
legends, and the tall Schafberg mountain divides it from the Wolfgangsee.
A
particular characteristic is the road rounding the whole lake which follows
the
rockface Kienbergwand on the south-east bank. The picturesque village
Mondsee offers a pretty promenade along the lake from where you can enjoy
a
nice panorama. This place also offers, besides the numerous sailing and
surfing schools, a lot of nice restaurants and various attractions. The
Mondsee is equipped with golf courses, situated directly on the lake, in
intact natural surroundings, between the water and the rockfaces.
